Families fleeing war-torn countries often get drastically separated. Desperate to save his seriously ill daughter, Hassan had to leave his wife and children behind in Syria. Today, the distance is unbearable. Helplessly waiting to obtain his refugee status in the Netherlands, he is filled with remorse and anxiety, as the world seems to be collapsing around his family and his daughter’s health declines. Alarming videos of his former city and cut-off phone conversations—often pressuring him to rapidly find a solution—are the only contact he has with his loved ones. Jiska Rickel’s fly-on-the-wall observation of the lengthy asylum process is a powerful and deeply moving account of the individual tragedies hidden behind statistics and administrative complexities. In Procedure is a must-see film to understand the harrowing limbo of countless refugees in Europe, and the urgent countries bear.
